PREDICTIONS, PREDICTIONS

Do you find it amazing that no matter what happens in the world and how often the predictions of the experts turn out to be completely wrong, it is never long before these same experts have a whole new set of predictions to offer? What is even more amazing is that no matter how many times the ones making the predictions totally miss it in what they predict people will still believe them the next time they make a prediction. It is a little like all the polls that are taken about everything. It seems that every day there is a new poll out telling everything we could want to know. There is really no reason for us to vote in the fall since the polls can tell us who will win anyway. Why not just take the polls and let that be the vote? But then I begin to think of the times when the polls were totally wrong. Also, I keep wondering why if these polls are so encompassing, why have I never been called to find out what I think in some of these matters. It should be clear that how one ask a question may often determine the answer they get and who I choose to ask my questions will certainly have a lot to do with the outcome.

What if it is true that no one really knows what the future holds except God and He hasn’t sent out any news releases that I’m aware of lately? I certainly find it intriguing that many go to the Bible and find predictions about what is going to happen next week when the Bible is nearly 2,000 years old and people have read those same predictions all down through the years and applied them to things going on in their own day. Did you know there have been people predicting the end of the world based on something they read in the Bible from the time the Bible was produced? I believe the Bible and I believe what it predicts happens just as it says, but I don’t have much faith in the ones who go to the Bible to find predictions about everything. It would always be helpful to ask the question, “What was the writer talking about and who was he talking to when he made the predictions?” The truth is the vast majority of the predictions people go to and apply to things happening today were fulfilled a long, long time ago and have nothing to do with events going on now.

I find it interesting that Peter in 2 Peter 3 focuses on the end of time and the second coming of Christ and what happens then. Look at some of his thoughts. “Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their evil desires. They will say, ‘Where is this coming he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.’ But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years as like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”

I don’t know when this will all happen. I know it will happen and that whenever the Lord comes again it will be a surprise. The thing that matters is that we live holy and godly lives all the time. I don’t know what the new heaven and new earth will look like but I know it will be amazing and we will be in the presence of God, Christ and the Holy Spirit along with all the redeemed of the ages. We won’t have to worry about any pandemics then. Instead of worrying about when it will happen, I need to live as I should each day so that whenever it happens I will be welcomed into the eternal home with God.
