WHAT GOOD IS GOD

I recently finished reading the new book by Philip Yancey with the title, “What good is God.” It is a tremendous book in which he looks at different situations and experiences around the world and then gives us a copy of the sermon he delivered to the people in each of the situations. It has an amazing variety of topics and is an encouraging and honest look at what God is doing in the different situations.

Yancey talks about in the beginning of the book, being in an automobile accident in which his neck was broken. At first the doctors thought that he wasn’t going to survive it and even told him that if there were people he wanted to talk to before his death he had better go ahead and call them. He wore a neck brace for several weeks afterward and had to take good care of himself during that time. It was during the time of his recovery that he received a call from one of the preachers near the Virginia Tech campus where a student had gone on a shooting rampage and killed several students and professors. They wanted him to come and speak to a group of people who had survived the incident. He went wearing the neck brace and spoke to the people.

He went to a convention of people who worked with the people who had been victims of the sex trade. He met with some fifty former prostitutes, most of whom had been forced into the trade while they were still very young. It was an amazing study of the people who worked in helping and rescuing those in the sex business.

He told of going to China and meeting with churches there that have been growing in the midst of persecution. It is illegal in China for any church or preacher to try to teach and convert any local Chinese. They can only legally work with those from other countries who are there working. It is amazing the growth taking place as people both living there from other places and local citizens risked their lives to come to Christ.

He told of going to India to preach to people who had become Christians and were involved in helping meet the huge needs in that part of the world. While there a terroristic attack took place and he had to be moved to a home outside the city. The place where he was to preach was closed to him and they had to do an impromptu meeting at a church building close to the home.

He also told of going to South Africa both before the revolution there and since and the changes that had been made. he told of a large church there that invited him and the growth of Christianity there.

There were many other topics and sections. It is a great study and one that will build your faith and devotion to God. I recommend it highly.
